Tony Lepore Is Not A Role Model For Kids

Currently, Mr. Lepore is slated to give a presentation about safety to kids at The Pawtucket Public Library on April 18th, 2018. Tony Lepore says Black Lives Matter is a hate group. He spouts anti-immigrant vitriol. He calls 'Dreamers' bums and drug dealers. A few years ago he tried to get a teenage employee of Dunkin' Donuts fired for writing Black Lives Matter on a coffee cup.
Mr. Lepore does not represent the values of our communities, and we do not want him held up as a role model for our children. The Pawtucket Public Library is widely known as a warm and welcoming place where people of all kinds come together. The decision to host Mr. Lepore calls that reputation into question. How can a person who considers immigrants dangerous be entrusted to speak to our children about safety?
Mr. Lepore has gained local and national attention for his controversial, combative, and racist public statements; his actions should not be celebrated.
Be assured, our city would not be the first to remove Mr. Lepore from public functions. Due to controversy, other municipalities, including Providence and East Providence, have decided not to employ Mr. Lepore. We’ve included three articles--two local, one national--that describe Mr. Lepore’s reputation, in case the additional reading is helpful for your understanding of the situation. We have also included an article from the American Psychological Association about racial trauma.
It normalizes xenophobia and racism to welcome someone with Mr. Lepore’s history and reputation to lead an event for our kids. Instead let's make these events welcoming to all the families that call our communities home. We stand up for racial justice. That's the kind safety we need to show our children.
