The House Bill 4006 that was introduced and passed January 17, 2018 by the House Education Committee dismantles the Department of Education and the Arts. With this comes an end to education programs in West Virginia such as Energy Express, the Governor’s Schools and Volunteer WV. These programs are vital to the thriving of our state and its students. Energy Express alone not only creates jobs for college students potentially in their field of study with hands on experience, but also provides two meals a day, one-on-one reading that is vital for young children, and attention that is not always provided at home. That is only one program of many that will see a likely end in result of this bill. In a state where 73% of third graders read below grade level, we cannot afford to lose these programs.
