Today at 3:30 pm EST the Safe Sport Act was signed by the president, turning all of our hard work into law! While athletes have tried for decades to get help from the U.S. Olympic Committee, it wasn’t until the IndyStar investigations exposed the scale of sexual abuse in gymnastics that Senator Dianne Feinstein got to work on legislation that would take real steps to protect athletes from abuse. Our legislation received an enormous boost when the whole world heard the heartbreaking, yet inspiring victims of Larry Nassar, over 250 of them, describe the pain of sexual abuse, and when you, our signers, joined the campaign to stop the abuse from ever happening again. As difficult as it was, the Nassar trial was a three-week master-class in trauma and recovery; it showed us all the damage that sexual abuse inflicts on victims and their entire families. The Nassar case also brought to light the underbelly of competitive sports – that sometimes the adults in charge care more about protecting the brand, making money, and winning medals than keeping our kids safe. We need to shift this culture, and the Safe Sport Act is an important step in that direction. Thanks to your support, and all the athletes, coaches, parents, sports organizations, leaders in child protection policies and sexual abuse prevention, adults working in sports will now be required by law to report suspected abuse to the police, child protection services, or to the F.B.I. For thirty years, including now as CEO of Champion Women, I have advocated for these athlete protections and am proud of this victory. In partnership with Equality League, our petition proves that when good people see something wrong in the world, we can mobilize to fix it. Thank you for joining us on this journey. However, our fight continues. While the Safe Sport Act is now law, our legislators still need to secure funding for the U.S. Center for SafeSport to be implemented, and it may require more support further down the road. We also need fundamental changes for athletes’ rights in the Olympic movement. We hope we can count on you to remain on our team, striving to make youth sports safe for everyone. With heartfelt appreciation, Nancy Hogshead-Makar, Esq., Oly CEO, Champion Women Mara Gubuan Founder, Equality League
