The Advertiser coverage and video relating to Hudson’s overdose

I want to provide an update on our petition following recent media coverage by The Advertiser.

Sharing this with the media was not an easy decision and was incredibly uncomfortable. I had no intention of this video ever being seen publicly, but if it helps people understand the seriousness of the error, then it has meaning.

The video included in this update is a painful reminder of the real impact this error has had on Hudson and how close we came to losing him. It is incredibly hard to watch and brings up so many emotions, but it also reminds us how grateful we are to still have him here.

No family should have to go through a preventable error where full liability is accepted and then be forced to fight at every front just to access basic therapy.

This doesn’t include my own therapy, the hours of work lost, or the loss of Hudson’s fourth birthday trip to Queensland because he wasn’t fit to fly, to name just a few of the ways this error has impacted us financially and practically. It also does not capture the wider impacts that have forever changed our lives. 

We are not asking for anything extraordinary. We are asking for the bare minimum. His medically recommended therapies should be covered, which is why legislation and safeguards are so important, ensuring children can access the supports they need to maximise their chance of recovery.

After 10 months, we finally received a payment on Monday, but it only covers Hudson’s therapy up until February. There is still only “consideration” around whether therapy from February onwards and future costs will be covered.

This is why change is needed. Families shouldn’t have to fight this hard, on top of everything else.
