Pass Bill S.1988 Protect MA Residents Rights to Say No to Smart and Wireless Meters

The Issue

Did you know that residents, right here in Massachusetts, have experienced utility termination for months on end, including residential water shut offs during the current pandemic, simply because they have refused a new smart meter upgrade?

Did you know that Massachusetts utility providers, on multiple occasions, have received documentation from medical professionals, recommending specified patients not have smart or digital utility meters installed on, or in, their home, due to health issues?

Did you know that, in multiple instances, Massachusetts utility providers have disregarded these medical recommendations and have not followed doctor's written instruction to allow certain residents the right to opt out of having a smart or digital utility meter on their home?

Did you know that there is currently no law in Massachusetts requiring that utility providers grant medically recommended smart meter opt outs as well as no law stating that utility providers cannot shut off service (water or electricity) for those who refuse smart meters, for any reason?

Did you know that smart meters are classified by the world health organization as a type 2B human carcinogen?

Did you know children are up to ten times more effected by radiation, than adults?

Did you know that, to date, there have been no studies showing the Long Term effects of smart meters, to human life?

Massachusetts bill S.1988, which is currently being considered by the statehouse, would protect each and every Massachusetts residents' right to choose whether or not they have smart, digital or analog meters installed on or in their homes, without penalty or service termination. Please join us in demanding the passage of this bill. Let law makers know you support bill S.1988, and in doing so, support ensuring and protecting every Massachusetts resident's right to reclaim control over which types of devices, and therefore radiation exposures, are on their property and within their own homes, without penalty or risk of service termination.

Excerpts from the bill itself below:

b) The department of public utilities shall direct utility companies to provide ratepayers the following:
(1) a choice of the type of utility meters to be installed and operated on their places of residence, property or business; among the choices offered shall be the installation and ongoing operation of an "electromechanical analog meter"; and
(2) the ability to retain and operate an “electromechanical analog meter” on an ongoing basis at no cost

e) Utility companies are:
(1) prohibited from shutting off service to a ratepayer based on the ratepayer having electromechanical analog meters;
(2) prohibited from imposing any disincentive on a ratepayer for not consenting to the installation or use of wireless meters;
(3) required to notify ratepayers in writing that the installation and use of wireless meters are not mandated by state or federal law and are not permitted without the ratepayer’s consent;
(4) prohibited from discriminating against ratepayers who may have medical conditions that are exacerbated by exposures to pulsed microwave radio frequencies;
