Pass a US-wide ban on environment damaging single-use plastic bags
The Issue
Disclaimer: The law says to sign this petition you must be 18+ /and/ a registered voter. Single-use plastic bags are a pervasive threat to our environment. These bags, often used for just a few minutes, can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, contaminating our soil and waterways in the process. Their production and disposal contribute to air pollution, harm marine life, and add to the ever-growing problem of plastic pollution.
The sight of plastic bags littering our cities, countryside, and oceans is a constant reminder of the damage they cause. They choke wildlife, block drainage systems, and are a significant source of microplastic pollution, which affects not just marine ecosystems, but human health as well. It's time we take decisive action to end this environmental threat.
A nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags in the United States would represent a monumental step in reducing plastic waste and encouraging sustainable practices across the country. While several states have already implemented such bans, a patchwork approach is insufficient for addressing an issue that affects the entire nation.
Adopting a federal ban would establish a consistent standard that would compel retailers to transition to eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable bags, which are not only better for the environment but also more durable and cost-effective in the long run. Such a measure would significantly cut down on the billions of plastic bags currently used annually in the U.S.
According to the Earth Policy Institute, the United States alone discards around 100 billion plastic bags each year, contributing enormously to the global waste crisis. If countries like Ireland and Rwanda have successfully implemented bans with marked reductions in plastic waste, there is no reason why the U.S. cannot follow suit.
Everytime I pass a field, I either see plastic nearby on in it. In the woods, there's plastic. Sometimes, plastic even drifts into my front yard.
Join me in urging lawmakers to implement a US-wide ban on environmentally harmful single-use plastic shopping bags. Let's push for a cleaner, healthier future for our planet and generations to come. Sign the petition and make your voice heard. Post this petition everywhere you can on social media, text and email it to family and friends, and DM it to influencers and micro influencers to have them include it in their posts. Thank you.
