A recent poll conducted in the UK has found that the British public views Canada, Australia and New Zealand as its “closest allies” compared to any other countries in the world.
The CANZUK countries received the highest levels of support, with 63-65% of the British public saying they regard these three countries as primarily being allies for the UK. The next closest countries in the results were France, Germany and the USA, who each received 56%, 51% and 44%, respectively.
In addition, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, along with the USA, have issued a joint statement regarding the erosion of human rights in Hong Kong with respect to democratic elections and liberties.
The joint statement comes days after Beijing imposed a new National Security Law which disqualifies political candidates and postpones Legislative Council elections. It is also demonstrative of the CANZUK countries' mutual respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
