PREMESSO CHE:

Animal Aid Italia, nel Settembre 2020, venne a conoscenza della storia di una Elefantessa di nome Andra, grazie al sopralluogo di una volontaria presso lo zoo mattutino del "Circo Rolando Orfei" che all'epoca era situato ad Aprilia (LT).

Nata in India nel 1959 Andra è stata sottratta alla libertà quando era ancora nel fiore della sua giovinezza. Non è chiaro a quale attività sia stata destinata nei primi anni di cattività, ma sappiamo che da ormai da molti anni è costretta ad esibirsi nei circhi.

Andra ha patito solitudine e pene corporali perpetrate per portarla ad eseguire esercizi del tutto innaturali davanti al pubblico, rispondendo come un automa agli stimoli dell’addestratore. Nel 2009 alcuni attivisti hanno ripreso in un video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-R0KMH135w - https://fb.watch/7LJaOnLEse/) alcuni momenti “dietro le quinte” del circo Massimo (l’attuale Rolando Orfei) in cui l’elefantessa veniva violentemente percossa con un bullhook, un bastone con uncino metallico all’estremità e che l’aggressore è fu identificato come Davide Coda Prim, uno dei proprietari del circo e tra gli addestratori dell’elefantessa. In quell’occasione il Ministro dell’agricoltura greco, Sortitris Hadzigakis, dichiarò che “questo comportamento, ai limiti della barbarie, non è in armonia con la loro cultura e che utilizzare gli animali per il divertimento umano è cosa del passato”. A distanza di appena tre anni, la Grecia approvò una norma che vietava l’utilizzo di qualsiasi animale negli spettacoli (Fonte LAV).

La storia di Andra è emersa nonostante i controlli insufficienti e superficiali degli entri preposti al controllo, grazie all’impegno di alcuni volontari. Ma sono ancora 2000 gli animali in Italia costretti a subire le medesime violenze, nonostante il 70% degli italiani siano contrario agli spettacoli vaganti che fanno uso di animali e già la maggior parte dei Paesi europei sia già approvato leggi e decreti per il divieto totale o parziale.

 

ANIMAL AID CHIEDE:

• La liberazione di Andra: “abbiamo una struttura privata, attrezzata e qualificata a    Bracciano, che la ospiterebbe a proprie spese fino alla fine dei suoi giorni”.

• Sia ripreso il prima possibile l’iter legislativo per lo smantellamento degli animali dai circhi.

• Che siano allestiti in tempi brevi dei centri di recupero per gli animali dismessi. 

• Che gli attuali contributi del FUS (Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo) destinati ai circhi con animali siano impiegati per i centri di cui al punto 2).

CONSIDERING THAT:

In September 2020, Animal Aid Italia became aware of the story of an Elephant named Andra, thanks to the visit of a volunteer to the morning zoo at the "Rolando Orfei circus" which at the time was located in Aprilia (LT), Italy.

Born in India in 1959, Andra was stolen from her freedom when she was still in the prime of her youth. It is not clear what activity she was intended for, in the first years of captivity. What we know is that for many years she has been forced to perform in circuses.

Andra has been suffering loneliness and corporal punishment perpetrated to lead her to perform completely unnatural exercises in front of the public, responding like an automaton to the trainer's stimuli. In 2009 some activists filmed in a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-R0KMH135w - https://fb.watch/7LJaOnLEse/), some moments "behind the scenes" of the Circus Maximus (currently Rolando Orfei) in which the elephant was violently beaten with a bullhook, a stick with a metal hook at the end and that the aggressor was identified as Davide Coda Prim, one of the owners of the circus and one of the trainers of the elephant. On that occasion, the Greek Minister of Agriculture, Sortitris Hadzigakis, declared that "this behavior, bordering on barbarism, is not in harmony with their culture and that using animals for human enjoyment is a thing of the past". Just three years later, Greece approved a rule that prohibited the use of any animal in shows (Source LAV).

Andra's story emerged despite the insufficient and superficial controls of the entrances in charge of control, thanks to the commitment of some volunteers. But there are still 2000 animals in Italy forced to suffer the same violence, despite 70% of Italians are opposed to traveling shows that use animals and most European countries have already approved laws and decrees for the total or partial ban.

 

ANIMAL AID REQUESTS:

• Andra’s release: “We have a private, equipped and qualified facility in Bracciano, which would host her at their own expenses until the end of her days”.

• To resume the legislative process for the dismantling of animals from circuses as soon as possible.

• To set up recovery centres for abandoned animals in a short time.

• That the current contributions of the FUS (Single Entertainment Fund) intended for circuses with animals be used for the centres referred to, in point 2).
