Manchester arena bombing: Let us register our children's deaths
The Issue
Our children were murdered in the Manchester Arena Bombing in May 2017. We have waited almost 6 years to register their deaths because an archaic law from 1953 prevents us from registering their deaths ourselves.
Our children will never come back. Their deaths have been the subject of 6 years of investigation. Their lives were taken because of the failings of authorities, of MI5, British Transport Police, Counter Terrorism Police & security services at Manchester Arena. We will never forgive them.
It is so hard to grieve when we cannot even write their names, address and dates of birth on their death certificates. This deeply personal task will be done by the state - we would like the choice to do it ourselves.
What we are asking as parents is to be allowed to provide personal details. We want to be the ones to give their name, address and date of birth and then finally walk out of the registry office with their certificate, just as we did at birth. What is so hard about that?
We are aware that some parents would prefer the state to do that and we respect their views - what we are asking for is the choice to do so. We accept that the coroner must give the cause of death but please allow the grieving parents the choice to do the rest. For us this will give us the opportunity to grieve with that final act.
We met with a government minister, Mike Freer MP and Lord Simon Murray who were incredibly supportive - but then Lord Murray changed his mind and said he would not look into the law change “as he believes it to be non controversial". Please sign and share this petition and help us get this into Parliament so that as parents we get the right to do this for our children.
Many thanks for your time reading our story, the parents of Liam, Chloe, Megan, Kelly & Eilidh xx
