Panera: It's Time to Offer Vegan Protein Options for Your Guests.

The Issue

Hi, Panera!

We, the cosigners, are baffled.

We see your colorful salads and bowls, your tasty looking sandwiches and pizzas, bursting with vegetables, grains and legumes, and we are confused why your menu remains so unfriendly to those of us who don't eat meat and other animal products. On the surface, Panera seems like it should be easy to dine at as a vegan, but if you really look at the menu, the reality is quite the opposite. You have nine salads, for example, and not one is vegan as is. You have five Warm Bowls and not one is vegan as is. To order any, they would have to be modified and there are no items to replace those taken off. Further, we pay for ingredients we don't eat.

We would love for Panera to step up your commitment to serving planet-friendly, fresh, whole foods by adding plant-based proteins to your menu as options for vegans, vegetarians and those trying to reduce their consumption of animals. Marinated tofu, chickpeas, products like Beyond Meat chicken-free strips would be excellent options to consider, as well as a dairy-free but creamy dressing, like a vegan Greek yogurt or tahini dressing. Adding a dairy-free cheese like Miyoko's (as cream cheese or mozzarella on salads) as an addition would be another thoughtful and considerate move for your guests.

Let's start with protein options, though, ideally not at an up-charge. It is time for you to step up to the plate, Panera. We would love to eat at your locations without the frustration of needing to omit the copious amount of meat in and on everything. You have your Cool Food Meals to try to take responsibility for lowering your impact on climate change. Here is a tangible way: Offer us plant-based (animal-free) protein options as easy, delicious substitutions for meat.

Thank you!
