A ROADMAP FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF INDONESIA AND TIMOR LESTE AND WHY THE WITHDRAWAL OF EURICO GUTERRES’ BINTANG JASA UTAMA MATTERS
Let’s get to the point. Let’s start anew of a future relationship between Indonesia and Timor Leste. In order to pave the way towards a better future, we need a better roadmap for the next generation of Indonesia and Timor Leste. I’m not saying a perfect roadmap, at least it is a better one than the past roadmap at hands. Using the past one will mislead our younger generations. Some point of views and perspectives should be corrected in order to give a better understanding of the past, and leading a way to the future.
First of all, we need to build this relationship at peace. We need to be honest that the past relationship between Indonesia and Timor Leste was disturbed by many events happened in the past. It’s wrong to see only the Timorese suffers from this, or being the victims. It’s misled for a next generation of Indonesians to think that the actions from the past will not contribute to Indonesia’s future. Both share the same feelings and responsibilities towards the future. By saying this, it is very important not to hand down a wrong perspective and wrong understanding of violation that happened in Timor Leste in the past.
The Bintang Jasa Utama given to Eurico Guterres is a false message sent to the next generation of the two countries. The award doesn’t help the next generation of Indonesia to understand that people have the right to decide what is best for themselves, be it a bitter and sad one for Indonesians. We have tried our best and need to respect the decision. To make thing worse, we sent a false message that Violence rather than peaceful actions are allowed approach to any conflicts out of a war and by any means awarded.
For the next generation of Timor Leste, it is important to build a strong confidence as a new nation. To stand equal to the neighbors and stand up and speak their thoughts amongst all countries. Indonesians need to support our relatively new neighbor as we are all brothers and sisters.
