Update on which candidates want to see the greenway agenda on the council agenda

Kiltimagh Greenway Group
May 21, 2019

This is a quick update before Friday for signatures of our petition about a parallel greenway alongside the proposed Velorail project.

We have put out enquiries to the candidates running in the Swinford Electoral District about the greenway proposals.   This notice only really concerns voters in the Charlestown Swinford Kiltimagh area.

We asked the candidates if they supported a greenway on the closed railway and if they supported the idea of a parallel greenway to run alongside the section of closed railway that the velorail will use.  We also asked if they would raise this issue with the council as Mayo coco has steadfastly refused to engage on this issue.

We are delighted to let you know three of our prospective councillors have come out in favour of the idea and want to see at least a feasibility study completed:

  • Michael Smyth FF,
  • Tom Lavin  FG
  • John Caulfield FF

Have all said the issue needs resolving and all options including a greenway need to be explored by the county council.

We know that Gerry Murray of SF opposes our idea for a greenway in any shape or form on the closed railway.   A vote for Gerry Murray is a vote against the greenway.

We asked Neil Cruise to comment but he has not yet got back to us, if anyone can pin Neil down on this issue please let us know so we can let voters know.

If the greenway matters in your voting intentions please give a high preference to the three named supporting candidates, Michael Smyth, Tom Lavin and John Caulfield.

Enjoy the election but above all please make sure you vote!

Thank you
