Hello everyone,
First, we want to thank everyone who signed the petition, sent emails, and helped us organize around this initiative. We are writing to update you on our successes since we began this petition and social media campaign. Our initiative was viewed by hundreds of people and got the attention of the Universidad de Puerto Rico Rio Piedras, specifically the director of the UPRRP theater.
The director of the theater responded to our open letter, and we were able to have a phone conversation with him. The theater expressed regrets in not being able to be in a financial and legal position to cancel the show of the racist flamenco dancer, Sonia Franco. They also expressed disappointment in Sonia and her team for not being transparent about their history of being called out for racism when the theater was vetting her.
The theater agreed to make a public statement on their social media expressing solidarity with us. They invited us to collaborate with them in creating educational programming at the university around Taíno and Afro-Caribbean resistance and resilience and the significance of October 12th. We are set to meet with them within the next few weeks to begin conversations about this alliance. Although the theater did not cancel the event, we are grateful for their receptiveness and are looking forward to the exciting possibilities.
In addition, we want to share that the first annual Taíno and Afro-Caribbean Day of Resistance events organized in cities across Boriken and the east coast (US) were a big success! We look forward to hosting these gatherings again next year.

Primero, queremos agradecer a todes los que firmaron la petición, enviaron correos electrónicos y que nos ayudaron a organizar esta iniciativa. Les escribimos para compartirles sobre nuestros logros desde que comenzamos esta petición y la campaña en las redes sociales.
Nuestra iniciativa fue vista por cientos de personas y logró captar la atención de la Universidad de Puerto Rico Río Piedras, específicamente del director del teatro de la UPRRP. El director del teatro respondió a nuestra carta abierta y tuvo una conversación por teléfono con nosotres. Él expresó su pesar por no poder estar en una posición financiera y legal para cancelar el espectáculo de la bailaora racista de flamenco, Sonia Franco. También expreso su decepción hacia Sonia y su equipo por no haber sido transparentes sobre su historial de acusaciones de racismo durante el proceso de selección.
El teatro acordó emitir un comunicado público en sus redes sociales expresando solidaridad con nosotres y también nos invitaron a colaborar en la creación de programas educativos en la universidad sobre la resistencia y resiliencia Indígena (Taíno) y Afrocaribeñe, así como la importancia del 12 de octubre. Estamos programados para reunirnos con ellos en las próximas semanas para comenzar las conversaciones sobre esta alianza.
Aunque el teatro no canceló el evento, estamos agradecidos por su receptividad y esperamos con entusiasmo las posibilidades que se presentan.
Además, queremos compartir que los primeros eventos anuales del Día de Resistencia: Taíno y Afrocaribeñe, organizados en ciudades de Borikén y la costa este de los Estados Unidos, fueron un gran éxito. ¡Esperamos poder llevar a cabo estas reuniones nuevamente el próximo año!
