I am writing this petition as a concerned sibling. My brother attends Rooks Heath School in Harrow, UK, where a new policy has banned mobile phones. This decision is not only alarming but also seems to be inadequately prepared for by the school. My main concern is that this ban compromises the safety of students, as it restricts them from staying in touch with their parents — a crucial need for their physical and mental well-being.

Consider an incident that occurred recently in Austria, where a child contacted their parents during an emergency which in Rooks Heath they wouldn’t be able to. It underlines the vital role mobile phones play in current times for ensuring the safety of children. In an era where communication is key, our children should not be left without this important means of staying connected with their families.

Another significant issue linked to this ban is the lack of communication by the school itself. There have been instances where parents were not informed about detentions on the day they are set, leaving them anxious and uninformed about their children's whereabouts. In a situation where mobile phones were accessible, students could easily communicate any changes in their schedule directly with their guardians.

This policy of banning mobile phones does not account for the complexities of modern life, where quick and efficient communication is often necessary. Instead of an outright ban, a more practical approach would be to implement guidelines on the use of mobile phones during school hours—such as limiting their use to breaks or ensuring they are switched off during lessons. This would balance the need for maintaining discipline with the essential safety and communication benefits that mobile phones offer. Above all a such a restrictive ban should have been discussed with parents as after all we live in a country of democracy where we should have a say on what is safest for our children.
