Right now in the state of Missouri, when there are questionable parents, the nurses will start a case with the social worker at the hospital. They will come down, speak to the family, and look at the chart. They will call DFS in if they feel the newborn is at risk. However, with the system now, it takes a lot to remove a child from their parents. Rare, but it is done on occasion. Especially if the kid ends up in the NICU. If none claim guardianship of the child they will end up in foster care. Currently, doctors can request a psych evaluation as an assessment where a psychiatrist will observe a mother’s behavior with the infant and help identify parental difficulties. A failed drug test or psych evaluation results can’t keep parents from leaving the hospital with a minor unless an imposed, immediate threat to the child’s life is made. Calling for the overturn of Amendment 3 through this petition, we are advocating for rights for medical professionals, social workers, and DFS workers to have legal weight to consider failed tests as reason for intervention on a child’s behalf. That there should be equal rights for an infant as to a mother. That they can work equally on behalf of the infant’s safety and equally support the mother through care, resources, and assistance that doesn’t end with the infant leaving a facility fully aware they aren’t safe. This is more than by definition just rights to be born, but pro-life inside and outside of the womb for ALL life. Let your voice be heard! We can’t just stop at signing this petition in our district. We need this signed by 8% of registered voters in 6 out of 8 districts to push to overturn this amendment. Be a part of the change!
