Tasmanian Labradoodles, the state’s largest puppy farm, has been shut down after it was charged with overbreeding.

250 dogs that require care for serious conditions have been rescued by RSPCA Tasmania.

The RSPCA said Tasmanian laws “failed us all” and has called for the state government to end puppy farming.

"The laws must change. We cannot let a situation like this happen ever again. Tasmania needs laws that ban puppy farms, and we need mandatory registration, standards and conduct for breeding established,” CEO Andrea Dawkins said.

Current laws in Tasmania (and South Australia and Queensland) effectively allow the overbreeding practices that occurred at Tasmanian Labradoodles. This causes an animal welfare crisis, capitalising on excited and unaware customers.

Victoria was the first state to implement meaningful laws to end puppy farming, followed by Western Australia. Now it’s time for Tasmania to do the same.
