OUSD is losing some of its most deeply rooted, committed, and experienced leadership. Following closely on Ms. Andujar's questionable "retirement," we are further disappointed to hear about the district's plan to remove long-term and highly respected Westlake Middle School Principal Misha Karigaca, who is widely supported by teachers, students, and families, and who has worked hard to improve all aspects of Westlake including academics, school climate, afterschool programs, and mental health services. This action is widely viewed by the community as retribution for Mr. Karigaca's not keeping a lid on parent and teacher protests last June, when the district unsuccessfully tried to force the school to “co-locate” a charter high school at the site. There is now a renewed attempt to do so and the removal of Mr. Karigaca appears to be an attempt to intimidate employees who are offering up some resistance. Mr. Karigaca and Ms. Andujar are both valued administrators who have clearly demonstrated that they were committed for the long-haul and were prepared to do the hard work necessary to not only implement big changes, but to ensure that they are successful. It is unfathomable why they would be forced out. We are left to speculate that their removal is connected to their unwillingness to promote one or more agendas that are not supported by a great number of OUSD families and teachers. The entire OUSD community needs to come together in support of what is working in Oakland. Please write to your school board Director and let them know that you want them to take a stand against this systematic dismantling of OUSD, with no regard for the voices of concerned parents and teachers, and no regard for the stability of schools and programs. Please also consider attending the next school board meeting to show solidarity with Mr. Karigaca and Ms. Andujar. Speaker cards must be turned in by 5:00 pm: March 9th, 5:00 pm The Great Room LaEscuelita Education Center 1050 2nd Avenue #RetainAndujar #OneWestlake
