Our WhatsApp Accounts Are Our Digital Lives — Stop Unfair Bans
Le problème
This petition is not about one person, one country, or one WhatsApp account.
It is a global call on behalf of legitimate Meta and WhatsApp users who have experienced unexplained restrictions, suspensions, account reviews, loss of access, or the inability to obtain meaningful human support.
Millions of people depend on WhatsApp every day — not simply as a messaging application, but as an essential part of their personal, social, and professional lives.
For many users, their WhatsApp account represents years of conversations, contacts, photographs, videos, documents, groups, professional relationships, communities, and memories.
When access suddenly disappears because of an automated decision, the consequences can be enormous.
This is a global issue
Users in different countries have reported experiences involving:
* Unexpected account restrictions
* Temporary or repeated bans
* Accounts being placed under review without clear explanations
* Permanent loss of access
* Automated appeals that do not resolve the problem
* Difficulty reaching a real human representative
* Loss of access to important conversations and groups
* Disruption to professional communication
* Fear of permanently losing years of personal and professional data
These are not simply technical inconveniences.
For many people, losing access to WhatsApp means losing access to an important part of their digital life.
When automation makes a mistake, real people pay the price
We understand why Meta needs sophisticated systems to combat spam, scams, fraud, harassment, and other forms of abuse.
We support those efforts.
But protecting users from abuse must not come at the expense of legitimate users who are incorrectly identified.
Automated systems can be powerful, but they can also make mistakes.
When that happens, there must be a meaningful way for a legitimate person to challenge the decision and have their case properly reviewed.
A legitimate user should be able to ask:
* What caused my restriction?
* Which policy was allegedly violated?
* Was the decision made automatically?
* Can I challenge the decision?
* Who will review my case?
* What happens to my data while my account is restricted?
* How can I recover my account if the decision was wrong?
WhatsApp accounts are not disposable
For many people, a WhatsApp account represents five, ten, or even more years of their digital life.
It may contain:
* Personal conversations
* Family communications
* Professional communications
* Contacts
* Photos and videos
* Documents
* Professional and community groups
* Paid communities
* Business relationships
* Educational networks
* Years of communication history
For professionals, WhatsApp can be essential for communicating with colleagues, clients, athletes, teams, organizations, and professional communities.
Suddenly losing access can affect someone’s work, relationships, opportunities, and livelihood.
A digital communication account should not be treated as disposable simply because an automated system has flagged it.
We are not asking Meta to weaken security
We are asking for better security and better fairness at the same time.
The fight against scams, fraud, spam, and abuse is necessary.
But legitimate users should not become collateral damage in that fight.
A system that protects billions of people must also have strong safeguards for the people it incorrectly identifies.
We call on Meta and WhatsApp to:
1. Guarantee meaningful human review
Users who dispute a restriction or suspension should have access to a genuine human review process, especially when an account faces repeated restrictions or permanent loss of access.
2. Explain restrictions clearly
Users should receive a meaningful explanation of the relevant policy and the general reason their account was restricted, while respecting legitimate security requirements.
3. Provide a real appeal mechanism
Appeals should not depend exclusively on automated responses. Legitimate users should have a meaningful opportunity to explain their situation.
4. Correct false positives quickly
When a restriction is found to be incorrect, the account should be restored as quickly as reasonably possible.
5. Protect users’ data
When an account is incorrectly restricted or suspended, users should have appropriate mechanisms to preserve and recover their legitimate data, contacts, conversations, and other information.
6. Increase transparency around automated enforcement
Meta should provide clearer information about how automated enforcement affects users, how false positives are identified, and how mistakes are corrected.
7. Protect long-standing legitimate accounts
Accounts with years of legitimate activity should receive appropriate safeguards against sudden and irreversible loss of access.
8. Do not make AI the only door to support
AI can assist customer service, but when an automated system has potentially made a serious mistake, users must have a path to meaningful human assistance.
Our message to Meta and WhatsApp
We are not asking for special treatment.
We are asking for fair treatment.
We are not asking Meta to stop using artificial intelligence.
We are asking Meta to ensure that artificial intelligence does not become the final authority over legitimate people’s digital lives.
Technology should protect people — not leave legitimate users powerless when something goes wrong.
A false positive can destroy years of communication in seconds.
A restriction without explanation can interrupt someone’s professional life.
An automated decision without meaningful human review can leave a legitimate user with nowhere to turn.
Our global demand
We call on Meta and WhatsApp to establish a transparent, accessible, effective, and human-supported process for legitimate users who are restricted, suspended, or incorrectly identified by automated enforcement systems.
No legitimate user should lose years of digital communication because an algorithm made a mistake and there was no meaningful human process available to correct it.
If you have experienced an unexplained WhatsApp restriction, suspension, account review, loss of access, or inadequate support, please sign this petition and share your experience.
If you have never experienced this problem yourself, you can still support the principle that legitimate users deserve transparency, accountability, and a fair opportunity to recover their accounts.
This petition is for everyone affected — and for everyone who believes that technology should remain accountable to the people it serves.
Protect users.
Improve transparency.
Give legitimate users a human review.
Don’t let automation destroy people’s digital lives.
