We believe student culture should be shaped by students.
We are disappointed that a recent mascot competition resulted in an AI-generated design being chosen without meaningful student input, consultation, or a democratic process. Students were promised a competition, but were ultimately sidelined in a decision that represents all of us.
A university mascot is not just branding. It reflects campus identity, community, and belonging. It should come from student creativity and be chosen by students, not imposed without consultation.
UNIty is calling for a transparent, student-led process to decide our mascot. This means open submissions, genuine feedback, and a fair vote where every student has an equal say. That is how trust, pride, and participation are built on campus.
UNIty stands for accountability, student voice, and collective decision-making. Our culture should never be something done to students, but something built with them.
This campaign is organised by UNIty, and supported by TAFE Labor Students, Young Labor Democratic Accord, Swinburne ALP - Labor Members, and Labor Students Victoria, who share a commitment to student voices and democratic decision-making on campuses.
