The UNIty Team has taken a much-needed break, and we are back and still fighting!
Over the break, we have been working on our game plan for Semester One, and we’re happy to announce that we’ll be on campus during O-Week to talk directly with students about why they want a public referendum to be held for the mascot.
Additionally, we have reached out to the SSA to book in a meeting bot only ask why such an important aspect of our university culture was decided by only one student and several staff members. But to get this referendum running!
While we would have loved for the University and the SSA, including its CEO Josh Gilligan, to have responded to our first email regarding the campaign, unfortunately they have chosen radio silence (perhaps holiday blues?).
Finally, we have sent an email to all Clubs, Societies, and Associations (CSAs) at Swinburne to hear back from them. It has come to our understanding that an exclusive meeting was held between the CSAs and the SSA. While we do not know what was said word-for-word, we have been informed (allegedly) that CSAs were threatened with funding cuts if they did not stop their campaign, resulting in the campaign closing through the removal of a joint social media post.
Once again, we ask students to stay involved with UNIty and our shared interest in overturning the fake mascot forced onto us by sharing this petition. We have well exceeded the 700-signature mark, and we know we can reach 1,000 with your support.
✊ Our Uni. Our Mascot!
