The Issue

To the U.S. Department of Justice, Illinois State Authorities, and Every Leader Bound to Protect Us:

On October 11, 2026, our collective hearts shattered when we learned how close we came to an unspeakable tragedy.

At the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, Illinois, hundreds of families, elders, and children were gathered in pure joy, celebrating the sacred festival of Navaratri. I had my own close, personal friends in the temple during those hours. Outside, a 19-year-old white stood armed with an assault rifle and body armor, actively attempting to execute a mass slaughter. The only reason a massacre did not occur is because his weapon miraculously jammed.

Knowing that people I love were inside that building makes this terror incredibly personal. We are deeply grateful our community was spared, but survival should never depend on a malfunctioning gun. No one should fear for their life in a house of worship. Our temples are built on peace and devotion—they must never be turned into battlegrounds by white supremacy and rising anti-Hindu hate.

We cannot remain silent. Refer news. We are signing this petition out of love for our neighbors, pain for our shattered sense of safety, and an absolute determination to protect one another. We request immediate, unwavering action from our government:

Prosecute with the Full Weight of the Law: We call on the Department of Justice to investigate and punish accordingly. Hate must face the consequences, or it will only grow bolder.

Fund and Pass the Pray Safe Act: We urge Congress to urgently pass safety measures like the  Pray Safe Act. Our federal government must provide centralized safety grants, security resources, and active protection for vulnerable faith communities.

Defend Our Local Sanctuaries:  We request that Illinois local governments immediately allocate dedicated safety resources and coordinate direct protection details for minority faith centers, ensuring that temples, mosques, synagogues, gurdwara’s and churches remain safe sanctuaries for all.

An attack on one faith is an attack on our shared humanity. Please sign to show the Aurora Hindu community they do not stand alone.
