This is Not about any one person, this is about our, (yours and mine), Democratic Rights which Bill 9 attacks.

Since 2024 Ontario Municipal Councils, (that’s the mayors and councillors that we elected in October 2022) have been asking the Ontario Provincial Government to give councils the right to ”fire” a duly elected colleague. We elected these mayors and councillors to make decisions about the financing and services of the municipalities NOT to decide who has the right to a seat on council. Currently the only way an elected representative can be removed from council is; if they are convicted of a criminal crime or miss 3 consecutive council meetings.

As a result the Hon. Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, has presented on May 1st, 2025 the 1st reading of "Bill 9, Municipal Accountability Act, 2025". In short if passed this act would allow an elected councilor's seat (or local board member e.g. school board) to be declared vacant and to  be disqualified from being a member of council (or local board) for a four-year period, beginning when the seat is vacated.

Danger, Danger,  if this Bill 9 passes the 2nd & 3rd readings say good bye to our democratic rights, it could open the way for governments to further override and eliminate our democratic rights.”  SIGN this petition.

Ontario's "Bill 9, Municipal Accountability Act, 2025" is a direct assault on our rights and an attempt to side step Canada's Constitution which sets forth the system of fundamental laws and principals that outline the nature, functions and limits of Canada’s system of government, both federal and provincial. It also prescribes which powers may be exercised, by which level of government, and sets limits to those powers.

The "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms" as part of  Canada's Constitution,  guarantees and protects the  Democratic Rights of Every Canadian Citizen, age 18 years and older, and not currentlly imprisoned; or convictedof an illegal practice in the past 5-7 years;

1.  the right to vote 
2.  the right to be a candidate for public office

If Bill 9 passes, in short, Municipal Councils (and local boards e.g. school boards)  would take the steps; to vacate the seat of and block our legally elected representatives for four years.  In other words, Representatives we voted for, that actually work for we the people, instead of following the corporations agendas would be fired by Municipal Councils and all with the permission of the provincial government's Bill 9. This is a direct attack on our Democratic Rights by;

1.  depriving we the people to vote for our preferred representative
2.  depriving, baning a canadian citizen18 yr+ to be a candidate for public office

If governments, federal, provincial or municipal had the right to remove an elected representative from office we wouldn’t be the constitutional and parliamentary democracy that we are.
