The Issue

Growing up in New York City, I've witnessed firsthand the passion and insight young people have when it comes to addressing issues in our communities. From conversations about school policies to debates surrounding public safety and mental health resources, youth are speaking up. Yet, when it comes to making critical decisions, our voices are frequently absent from the table.

Consider the recent discussions on educational reforms. Despite being the primary stakeholders, students often find themselves sidelined, having their ideas filtered through adults who may not share the same experiences or concerns. Likewise, teenagers impacted by local safety measures or mental health policies rarely have the opportunity to articulate their perspectives where it matters most—during the decision-making process itself.

According to the City of New York Department of City Planning, approximately 22% of the city’s population is under the age of 18. Yet, the representation of this demographic in community boards and councils is negligible, if not entirely absent. This lack of involvement not only hinders the ability of policies to fully meet the needs of our youth but also stifles the development of future leaders and civic-minded citizens.

The solution is clear: our city must establish formal mechanisms for integrating youth voices into decisions affecting education, safety, mental health, employment, recreational facilities, transportation, and more. This could include developing designated youth advisory roles in existing community boards, creating youth councils that work in tandem with local government, or mandating regular consultations with youth representatives on specific issues.

Not only will this enrich the decision-making process with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, but it will also empower young people, making them active participants in shaping the future they will inherit. By providing young people a seat at the table, we ensure that diverse voices contribute to creating inclusive and effective policies.

We invite you to support this initiative and help us call on NYC leaders and policymakers to make a commitment to genuine youth inclusion in community decision-making. Sign this petition and stand with us in advocating for a more equitable and representative future for our city.
