Dear Supporters,

Thank you for signing our petition to hold the City of Ottawa accountable for the damages caused by the August 10, 2023, flood in the Meadowlands Rd West area. We’ve reached 76 signatures so far, but we need 300 signatures to take this important issue to the Supreme Court.

The City of Ottawa has recently denied multiple claims for compensation, despite clear evidence that the City’s storm sewer system was overwhelmed by the flood, resulting in significant damage to homes. In fact, the City has only now begun to dig up and renovate every single sewer on our street because they know the infrastructure was inadequate to protect our homes from this disaster. Yet, residents are being left to bear the financial burden due to the outdated Municipal Act, 2001, which shields municipalities from liability unless negligence is proven.

We are asking the City of Ottawa to:

Take responsibility for failing to maintain and upgrade public infrastructure adequately.
Compensate residents who have suffered flood-related damages.
Support changes to the Municipal Act, 2001, so future flooding incidents don’t leave homeowners unprotected.
