The remains of Grand Duchess Maria and Tsarevich Alexei Romanov should be burried along with the rest of their family, in Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. The two children, as well as the rest of the Imperial Family, were murdered in Ekaterimburg on the 17th of July 1918. However, they were burried separatedly from the rest of the family, and when the remains of the Romanovs were found and buried in 1991, Maria and Alexei hadn’t been found yet. In 2007, an American group named S.E.A.R.C.H, found the remains of the two children in a forest, nearby where the rest of their family had been found before. Despite overwhelming forensic and DNA evidence, the Orthodox Church refuses to recognize these remains as belonging to Alexei and Maria. For several years, the boxes containing the few bone fragments that were found remain on a shelf in the Russian state archives.
