In 2014, President Robert J. Zimmer and Provost Eric Isaacs of The University of Chicago appointed a committee of University faculty to articulate “the University’s overarching commitment to free, robust, and uninhibited debate.” The resulting “Chicago Principles” have since been adopted by universities and colleges across the country.

Schools include Princeton, Purdue, Johns Hopkins, American University, Michigan State, University of Wisconsin, Claremont McKenna, Kenyon College, Georgetown, DePauw University, The Citadel - to name a few. 

Such principles are indeed relevant today and many say are now necessary for High School environments.

As Oak Park and River Forest young adults prepare to return to the classroom, and as parents seek to understand their students' learning environment, we the undersigned would like the Board of Education, in concert with the Administration leadership, to adopt the following statement in the spirit of the University of Chicago Principles and in support of all of our students, the OPRF community, and our teachers: 

 “Oak Park and River Forest High School believes that a fundamental aspect of our mission is to develop critical thinkers who can navigate a complex world through civil discourse, respectful inquiry, engaged listening and open consideration of multiple perspectives.  Key to fulfilling this charge is the cultivation of a school environment in which all students feel welcome and free to explore a wide range of ideas.  Our firm commitment to this principle reflects not only OPRF’s obligation to prepare our students for their future but our belief that the open exchange of ideas lies at the core of a democratic society in which individuals are accountable for their actions and treat one another with dignity, compassion, and respect.” 

Simply put, why wouldn't our school want to discuss and adopt such a statement which promotes civility, growth and greater learning from each other? We respectfully ask for a formal response if the OPRF BOE will discuss and vote on such statement at their first Board meeting of the 2022-2023 school year.
