PUBLIC PETITION
Petition: Opposition to Proposed location of Pickleball Courts at Baie D’Urfe Tennis Club
We, the undersigned residents, strongly oppose the proposed installation of pickleball courts at this location.
While Pickleball is fun , This specific site is not appropriate for a high-impact recreational facility and raises serious concerns affecting the surrounding community and environment:
- Excessive Noise: Pickleball produces a sharp, repetitive sound that carries well beyond court boundaries and is highly disruptive in a quiet residential setting.
- Proximity to Homes: The proposed courts are too close to nearby residences, increasing noise, disturbance, and loss of privacy.
- Tree Loss & Habitat Impact: The project would require removal of mature trees, younger trees , including an mature established cedar hedge that currently provides a natural buffer, privacy, and environmental protection. Other suitable areas in the town require no habitat destruction.
- The specific area is part of a sensitive natural environment where increased noise and activity may disturb local wildlife, including a known foraging area for Bald Eagles
- Surface Water & Drainage Concerns: The introduction of large concrete surfaces will increase runoff and reduce natural absorption, potentially affecting surrounding areas and existing recreational surfaces.
- Overuse of Existing Space: The area is already heavily used by multiple recreational facilities, contributing to congestion, parking pressure, and competing uses.
- Lack of Public Consultation: Residents have not been adequately consulted on a project that significantly impacts the community.
- The $400,000 budget , if funds are available does not justify their use, particularly when they come from taxpayers and the project’s location is in question
We call on the City to:
- Pause the project immediately
- Conduct proper environmental, noise, and drainage studies
- Engage in meaningful public consultation
- Reassess the suitability of this location
- This proposal is not appropriate for this site given its environmental and residential context.
- Revisit the excessive budget.
Thank You
