Opposition to ENMAX's Central Calgary Above Ground Transmission Line Replacement

Opposition to ENMAX's Central Calgary Above Ground Transmission Line Replacement
The Issue
Enmax is planning to relocate a high voltage transmission line through our community of Winston Heights/Mountview. The proposed above ground route is along the south side of Munro Park 17th avenue north of the new COOP development as well as Mountview Apartments, the Fanning Centre and the Ambassador Motel and then the north side of 16th avenue (Midfield Heights) to Nose Creek. Enmax's preferred option is to install 22 to 28 metre (7 to 9 stories) tall steel monopoles. We are asking for the alternative which is to bury the lines through our community, as they are doing west of Edmonton Trail in Tuxedo Park. Click here for further details.
Not only will the above ground route have a negative visual impact, but it will reduce our property values and have long term effects on the developability of our community. Would you want to have a house next to or across the street from a 9 story steel monopole?
We are asking Enmax to bury the line through our community which would add an additional 20% to the cost of the project ($50 million vs $40 million). Enmax is opposed to burying the line because the additional cost would be borne by the ratepayers. We feel it is unfair to offload this cost onto our small community instead of having the thousands of users of ENMAX’s system (ratepayers) pay the real cost of proper infrastructure.
This petition is part of a two prong approach to opposing the above ground route. "Prong One" - we have hired legal counsel to represent Winston Heights/Mountview and a variety of other interveners at the Alberta Utilities Commission hearing in May which will decide the route. This petition is part of the 2nd prong of creating political pressure for the real cost to not be offloaded onto our community.
Please sign and circulate this petition which will then be forwarded to Enmax, Enmax’s Board of Directors, the City of Calgary Parks and Open Spaces, Councillor Sean Chu, Mayor Jyoti Gondek and MLA Lizette Tejada.
I oppose the proposed above ground route for the Enmax Central Calgary Replacement Project through the community of Winston Heights/Mountview and urge Enmax to pursue the underground route for this project.
