The Issue

As residents of our close-knit community, we constantly strive to protect our health, well-being, and quality of life. A proposed plan threatens these values with the planned construction of a wastewater treatment plant only a quarter of a mile away. The potential health risks associated with living near such facilities are concerning; we face exposure to odors, airborne contaminants, and increased risk of respiratory and digestive issues. Although the risk of direct contamination into the air is regarded as low by the developers, additional concerns related to air quality and potential health effects require serious attention.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that living within close proximity of wastewater treatment plants can have negative health impacts. A study conducted by the University of Maryland concluded that the risk of gastrointestinal diseases can increase by up to 25% for those living within a three-mile radius of such plants (University of Maryland, 2018). Another report from the European Respiratory Journal showed that people living near wastewater treatment plants are twice as likely to report health conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases (European Respiratory Journal, 2014).

By reconsidering the proposed plant's location, we can protect our community from the potential impact of such risks. We urge the developers and local authorities to prioritise our health and relocate the wastewater treatment plant to a safe distance from residential areas. Sign this petition to protect the health of our community.
