Oppose the State Sunlight-Long Well Pad and Protect Our Children

The Issue

As a concerned parent, I fear for the safety and health of my young son who will be attending school only 1.1 miles from the proposed site for the State Sunlight-Long well pad. Tens of thousands more in our community face similar exposure risks. For those unaware, this proposal is to place a fracking well pad dangerously close to 10,000 homes, schools, and the Aurora Reservoir. Just imagine, it is set to be only 3,000 ft from homes and 1.15 MILES from TWO public schools: Altitude Elementary and Woodland Elementary.

It is highly probable that there will be spills and leaks of toxic chemicals from the proposed new wells into our water supply. Contaminants will not be contained in the Aurora Reservoir; they will join the Platte River Basin, a watershed that supplies much of the American West.

The Arapahoe County has the authority to deny this application by Civitas and we urge them to do exactly that. The fracking of up to 32 wells on a 35 acre site will place the State Sunlight-Long well pad as one of the largest in Colorado, its production lasting for multiple decades while putting our beloved community at risk.

The studies are alarming. Recent research conducted locally cites how children living within 3-8 miles of oil and gas operations are at a higher risk of developing aggressive forms of childhood cancer, known as acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Another Colorado study examines worrying increased incidences of people living within 1 mile of fracking sites with respiratory disease, gastrointestinal, and acute symptoms. We must not allow the health of our families, friends, neighbors to be placed at risk should this well pad see completion.

For the future of our children and our community, we must implore the Energy & Carbon Management Commission and Arapahoe County to deny this proposed well pad. It does not belong near our homes, our schools, our reservoir - IT DOES NOT BELONG HERE.

Please, add your voice to ours and demand the Colorado Energy & Carbon Management Commission  and Arapahoe County reject the proposed location of the State Sunlight-Long well pad. Please sign this petition.
