The Issue

For over two millennia, the body of water separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula has been known as the Persian Gulf. This name is deeply rooted in history, appearing in ancient texts, maps, and international documents.

Recently, during a press conference at the White House, President Donald Trump announced that he would decide whether the U.S. should officially refer to the Persian Gulf as the "Arabian Gulf" or "Gulf of Arabia" during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. This potential renaming has sparked strong backlash from Iranians across the political spectrum, who view the "Persian Gulf" name as a core part of their national identity and history.

Such a change not only disregards historical facts but also threatens to erase a significant part of cultural heritage. The term "Persian Gulf" is recognized by the United Nations and is used in numerous international treaties and documents. Altering this name sets a dangerous precedent of politicizing geographical nomenclature.

We urge international organizations, educational institutions, media outlets, and global map publishers to:

• Uphold the historically accurate name: Persian Gulf.

• Resist political pressures that aim to alter established geographical names.

• Promote the preservation of cultural and historical integrity in global discourse.

Sign this petition to stand against the politicization of geography and to preserve the rightful name of the Persian Gulf for future generations.
