Oppose the Proposed Trump Commemorative Coin: Honor Jesus Christ Instead

The Issue

Urge the U.S. Treasury to reconsider the proposed Trump commemorative coin and instead honor Jesus Christ, aligning with legal precedents and the nation's Christian heritage.

The U.S. Treasury Department has unveiled a draft design for a $1 commemorative coin featuring former President Donald Trump, proposed to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. However, this proposal raises significant legal concerns.

Federal law prohibits the depiction of living individuals on U.S. currency. Specifically, 31 U.S. Code § 5112 prohibits the inclusion of any portrait of a living person on any coin issued under this subsection Legal Information Institute. Additionally, a 2020 law explicitly bars portraits of living persons on coins commemorating the semi quincentennial.

Given these legal restrictions, the proposed Trump coin may violate federal statutes. Furthermore, the tradition of U.S. coinage has been to honor historical figures who have passed, ensuring a dignified and respectful representation of American history.

In light of these considerations, we propose that the U.S. Treasury honor Jesus Christ on a commemorative coin. Jesus' teachings have profoundly influenced the moral and ethical foundations of the United States and honoring Him would reflect the nation's Christian heritage.

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the U.S. Treasury to reconsider the proposed Trump commemorative coin and instead issue a coin honoring Jesus Christ, in accordance with legal precedents and the nation's values.
