The Issue
Protected bike lanes on E 72nd Street will cause issues including pedestrian safety, bike safety, parking difficulty, truck traffic congestion and neighborhood business impediments.
72nd street has many bus stops on both sides of the street making protected bike lanes difficult and dangerous for pedestrians.
The current city bike lanes are not monitored safely by police. For example, the 1st avenue protected bike lane frequently hosts 2 way bicycle traffic which is dangerous on a one way avenue. This causes potential for cyclist on cyclist head on collisions as well as harm to pedestrian not looking left and right before crossing.
This would be particularly harmful on E 72nd street to the families with small children, the elderly, the doctors offices who will have wheel chair access impeded.
Curb side taxi drop off will cause congestion on a routine basis. This will be exacerbated by delivery trucks on what is already a congested artery.
The bus traffic is already significant. The second avenue subway stop on E 72nd street will cause heavy pedestrian congestion which will further amplify the cycling dangers.
