The Issue

Growing up as a student in Pennsylvania my entire life, I've experienced the countless ways how having a mobile phone has impacted my educational experience. From using educational apps to collaboratively engaging with others on school projects via group chats and video calls, mobile phones have become an indispensable resource. They are not just tools for communication but vital learning aids that help in our educational system. As a student that has an IEP, my phone has been a huge help for me in school as well. When I’m allowed to use it like at lunch, I’m glad I also can do that because I don’t know anybody in my lunch. I struggle with anxiety and get afraid and my phone helps by giving recourses for me to calm down.

Beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, Pennsylvania schools are planning to impose a ban on mobile phones. This decision could lead to bigger educational inequalities and strip students of an essential resource. In a world that is increasingly reliant on technology, removing access to mobile phones places students at a disadvantage, hindering their ability to learn, communicate, and prepare for the future. Statistics show that in 2022, over 80% of educational institutions in the U.S. have incorporated mobile technology into their curriculum, finding it enhances learning and engagement among students. Research indicates that students that have mobile phones are better prepared for real-world challenges, where technological literacy is integral. Furthermore, teaching responsible phone usage also imparts crucial life skills. We understand concerns about misuse—these can be addressed through fair phone rules and education on digital citizenship, rather than an outright ban. Also, during school emergencies such as a fire or lockdown, it’s imperative that students have their belongings and have a direct line of communication to family in case something bad happens. Schools should enact clear guidelines that allow phone use at times like when a student finishes their classwork or at lunch and students, ensuring students remain engaged without being distracted. Since students already get punished for using phones in class, in theory this ban does nothing positive for the students. Kids could try to break the rules which they will get in trouble. It's our responsibility to stand up for the future of education in Pennsylvania. To ensure that students are ready for a technology-driven world, we need to oppose the upcoming phone ban.
