Oppose the Development of Hastings Park Green Belt and Protect the Tranquility of Anthem

The Issue

No part of this petition is intended to discredit or disparage the process taken by the board to obtain public opinion through forum to plan and propose enhancements in the master plan. A large part of that process has yielded wonderful community enhancements that we are appreciative of and that greatly benefit the community. A source close to the board stated that roughly 700 responses were received regarding the facilities master plan. However, it seems this process managed to capture the opinion of the greater Anthem population while missing the opinion and concern of the surrounding neighborhoods that will be mainly affected by the repurposing of this area. The following concerns are quotes from homeowners that will be directly and negatively impacted should this project move forward as part of the master plan. With that said, please read and take these concerns into consideration for the following:

We are petitioning for a motion of the board to vote for removal of this project from the master plan all together.

Concerns from the community are as follows:

-The parking addition will take away from the field leaving room for potentially two soccer fields and leaving no open space for free use.
-This will disrupt the gorgeous views that homeowners paid premium lot price for with the promise that the field would not be developed.
-The amount of traffic this will draw into a neighborhood on a two lane road in a school zone has not been evaluated. An average soccer tournament brings 30-40 cars per team. We are looking at hundreds of cars, disruption of peace and tranquility in the immediate neighborhoods, overflow parking into the streets, and non resident visitors using and abusing the area. This will introduce many new traffic hazards and safety concerns as well as the potential for crime increase and vandalization of the immediate area.
-The construction timeline will impede traffic during the school year and particularly make a congested pick up and drop off line even more difficult. This creates a hazard for children getting to and from school.
-The new parking addition would create a tempting place for parents to park and skip the designated pick up and drop off areas, causing children to cross multiple streams of traffic and increase risk of accident and injury.
-The houses that back up to the field will have an increased lack of privacy with the substantial amount of traffic and events this will bring as you can see into their yards from the road and they can see the field from their back porches.
-There is concern for the restriction of an amenity that will now allow and/or require reservation for use. Therefore bringing in teams that would normally practice and play at the big park and/or opportunity way park into the center of a quiet neighborhood impeding our ability to use the space freely as we have done since it’s original designation.
-There has not been consideration for the impact this will have on wildlife that live in the adjacent wash and use the green belt nocturnally.
-The root of most concerns are safety, tranquility, and protection of our homes, families, and nature.

-Parking already exists in abundance at 3 nearby lots with smooth and well maintained walking paths to Hastings field.
-Restrooms already exist a short walk from the field at liberty bell park and splash pad.
