Oppose Southampton's Plan to Cut Downtown Parking by 53%

Oppose Southampton's Plan to Cut Downtown Parking by 53%
The Issue
I am a small business owner in downtown Southampton and my livelihood is tied to this community. The town recently proposed to eliminate 52% of the downtown parking on High Street which would have a catastrophic impact on small businesses and residents alike.
Southampton is a vibrant, bustling town, especially in the summer months. We thrive on the foot traffic, from locals to tourists, attracted by our local businesses and scenic spots. Limited parking will discourely potential customers and visitors from stopping in our downtown area. It's estimated that as many as 70% of our visitors use downtown parking, and cutting it by over half threatens our local economy and the vibrancy of our community.
The health of our downtown businesses has a ripple effect on our entire community, affecting employment, local tax revenue, tourism, and overall quality of life. We must prioritize accessibility and convenience for those who support Southampton's downtown businesses.
In addition to the loss of parking, I believe the current location of the Southampton cenotaph is ideal and perfect, ensuring it is highly visible and unforgettable. While I agree that improvements could be made to the monument, moving it would detract from its prominent and meaningful position.
We urge the town council to reconsider their plans, to look at alternatives that won't harm local businesses or inconvenience residents and visitors. Please support our small town charm and character by opposing the proposed elimination of 52% of downtown parking.
