Oppose New Convenience Store/Gas Station in Collierville, TN

The Issue

Violence at convenience stores and gas stations is on the rise in Shelby County:

Shooting at Memphis Parkway Village Gas Station

Shooting at Southeast Memphis Gas Station

And in Collierville, we have experienced our share of violent crime at community gas stations and convenience stores:

Mother Robbed at Gunpoint at Collierville Convenience Store

Man Beaten at Collierville Gas Station

I, along with many other concerned residents of Collierville, vehemently oppose the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) Case #241834 – Price Farm PD, Area 2, Parcel 1B. The permit seeks to create a convenience store/service station with a carwash on 1.5-acres located northeast of the Shelby Drive and Houston Levee Road intersection. However, no such demand or need for another gas station, convenience store, or car wash exists in our community, making this a needless and dangerous encroachment that only serves the desires of the applicant, Anwar Aman, at the expense of the safety of our beloved town.

Gas stations and convenience stores have unfortunately become frequent targets for violent crime, and figures from published studies confirm an escalating trend of violent crime on these properties:

Business and property types experiencing excess violent crime

Convenience Stores and Gas Stations Magnets for Violent Crime

Their location near interstates and state routes provides criminals all-too-easy access and escape routes, particularly as Memphis is only a few miles away:

The impact of the interstate on violent crime in three southern states

Nearby retail outlets in the Carriage Crossing Mall and shopping strip on the south side of Shelby drive are already targets of theft and robbery and have experienced several incidents of assault. The synergistic effect of adding a crime magnet like a gas station/convenience store to this area of increasing commercial blight will result in a less safe and less desirable area in our peaceful community.

Further exacerbating crime levels is not in the best interest of our town. The peace, security, and well-being of our community should not be compromised to accommodate an unnecessary commercial venture. We should aim to protect our neighborhoods from potential hot spots for crime rather than placing them in harm's way. It is high time that the needs of the community take precedence over needless commercial exploitations.
