The Issue

We, the undersigned families and community members, strongly oppose the proposed boundary change that would move Riego Creek Elementary students from the Chilton Junior High pathway to Cooley Middle School.

Many families chose to purchase homes and enroll their children in Riego Creek Elementary with the clear understanding that the established feeder pattern continued to Chilton Junior High. This pathway has been a significant factor in long-term family and housing decisions within our community.

Chilton Junior High is a significantly newer campus, and publicly available school performance data shows that Cooley Middle School currently has lower ratings across nearly all academic measures. Reassigning students to a different school with lower performance metrics raises serious concerns for families who carefully considered these factors when choosing where to live and raise their children.

Changing this feeder pattern after families have already committed to the community undermines the expectations that were set when these neighborhoods were developed and marketed.

We respectfully ask the district and school board to:

• Preserve the existing Riego Creek → Chilton Junior High feeder pattern, or

• At minimum, grandfather currently enrolled Riego Creek Elementary students into the Chilton pathway so families are not impacted after making long-term decisions based on the current structure.

Our community values stability, transparency, and strong educational opportunities for our children. We urge the district to reconsider this proposal and work with families to find a solution that protects both students and the expectations under which this community was built.
