The Issue

Growing up in the heart of the Adirondacks, I've always cherished the serene beauty and pristine environment that the Great Sacandaga Lake provides. However, the recent proposal to build a lithium-ion battery storage facility less than a mile from my home in the Town of Northampton, NY, threatens to disrupt this cherished landscape and compromise the safety and livelihoods of its residents.

The proposed facility, if built, could pose significant environmental risks to the Great Sacandaga Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. Lithium-ion batteries, while essential for modern energy solutions, carry the potential for hazardous leaks and fires, especially in large-scale storage systems. Such incidents could have disastrous consequences for the lake's water quality and the diverse wildlife that depends on it. A single accident could result in contamination that would take years to remedy, effectively harming local flora and fauna.

Moreover, the introduction of an industrial facility in this residential and recreational area could severely impact property values, disrupt community life, and deter tourism, which is a critical component of our local economy. The Adirondacks have thrived because of their natural allure and ecological significance, not as industrial hubs.

We call on local authorities and decision-makers to carefully consider these potential impacts. Alternatives such as investing in renewable energy sources that do not jeopardize the environment should be explored. This is not just about opposing development, but about choosing sustainable solutions that respect both our need for energy and our duty to protect the environment.

I urge you to stand with me in opposition to this proposal. Sign this petition to help safeguard the beauty and integrity of the Great Sacandaga Lake and to protect the Adirondacks for current and future generations.
