Oppose lack of transparency in Saline schools hiring
The Issue
Community Petition: Ensure Transparency in Saline School Safety Hiring
Background:
Saline Area Schools recently hired Dan Karrick as Director of Safety and Security. Despite the public safety responsibilities of this position, the district has refused to release basic hiring documentation and has not addressed concerns about Karrick’s controversial past while at Eastern Michigan University. A Freedom of Information Act request was denied, citing privacy, and community members—including a former Secret Service agent and school safety expert—were excluded from meaningful input.
Our Children Deserve Better.
We, the undersigned, call on the Saline Area Schools Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Steve Laatsch to:
Publicly explain the vetting process used to select the Director of Safety and Security.
Release redacted records sufficient to show transparency without violating privacy law.
Invite an independent review of the hiring process by the Michigan Office of School Safety.
Commit to a transparent and inclusive process for all future safety-related hires.
Why This Matters:
This is not about who was hired—it’s about whether community voices, transparency, and public trust were part of the process. Every parent deserves to know the person in charge of protecting our schools is fully vetted
