In late 2024, the Australian government passed the "Social Media Ban" under the guise of child safety. This law will require ALL Australians to provide a facial scan or government issued ID to use social media platforms in Australia. 

The social media ban creates risk to the privacy of everyday Australians and those visiting in Australia. By providing government issued documentation such as Lisenses or Passports, we risk our personal information falling into the hands of cyber criminals who can open fraudulent bank accounts, impersonate and many other things. This isn't just about the risk of cybercrime however. This is government overreach. By allowing our government to impose a ban across social media, they tie EVERY social media site that we would log into to a digital identity. This poses several problems for the Australian people. Firstly and most importantly, the government will be able to move towards censorship and will be one step closer to achieving that goal. Currently, in the UK, the government there has passed a bill that forces all of it's citizens to log in to any website that isn't considered child safe. This includes things as simple as anatomy websites, youtube and many more. This allows them to claim that certain user posts on some websites are not child friendly and even claim that political topics are not for children under 18 but are happy to let them go to war and even VOTE at 16. 

If the Australian government follows suit, we will be soon living in a dystopia where the government knows everything we do and can censor opinions they don't like, virtually allowing them to use propaganda to change the laws in their favor - not the Australian peoples.
