Thank you to all those who have signed thus far! I have asked Robyn Doolittle and the Unfounded team to publicly recant statements that Emelie R. “committed” suicide, as it implies criminal intent and ignores the externally injurious events she experienced. Furthermore, it removes the culpability of her rapists and other actors that intensified her traumatic exposure following a horrifying alcohol-facilitated gang-rape that was non-consensually recorded. Her case is very similar to that of Rehtaeh Parsons, hence why it is absolutely imperative an independent review looks at the role and response of the media, Laurentian University, police and prosecutors in events after her sexual assault and leading up to her death. It would be worthwhile to see what parts of Murray Segal’s 17 recommendations were not followed to further enshrine the need to observe the progress report to prevent perversions of justice like this, both now and in the future.
