Stop OpenAI's December 2026 Shared Usage Limits

To OpenAI Leadership:

We, the undersigned paying subscribers and users of ChatGPT, Work, and Codex, urge OpenAI to reverse its decision to introduce a unified usage allowance in December 2026.

We support unified functionality. We oppose unified usage restrictions.

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT and Codex will share a single usage allowance. While Instant conversations will remain unlimited, advanced models and agentic workloads will compete for the same limited resources.

This change threatens the productivity and economic viability of ChatGPT for independent developers, researchers, students, freelancers, and small businesses.

Why This Matters

Many subscribers rely on advanced ChatGPT models for hours of daily work, including software development, scientific research, security analysis, education, and complex problem-solving.

These activities are fundamentally different from short, casual conversations.

Under a shared allowance, extensive use of advanced ChatGPT reasoning could reduce the resources available for Codex and Work — and vice versa.

Some subscribers already report exhausting their available Work usage allowance after relatively short periods of activity.

For example, one Plus subscriber experienced approximately 15 minutes of ordinary conversation in Work mode before the available allowance was exhausted.

This individual experience does not establish a universal limit, but it demonstrates why subscribers need predictable and transparent usage conditions.

Simply doubling an insufficient allowance would not necessarily solve the problem.

The Economic Problem

Many of us pay a monthly subscription because we need predictable costs.

We cannot afford unpredictable additional charges for every demanding research project, development task, or extended technical discussion.

Upgrading to subscriptions costing hundreds of dollars per month is not a realistic solution for many independent professionals.

Advanced AI must remain economically accessible to people who cannot justify enterprise-level spending.

We recognize that advanced AI requires substantial computing resources.

We are not demanding unlimited autonomous computing power.

We are asking OpenAI not to undermine the practical value of existing paid subscriptions.

Our Five Demands

1. Cancel the December 2026 usage allowance consolidation.

Preserve separate usage allowances for advanced ChatGPT conversations and Work/Codex.

2. Protect existing subscribers.

Guarantee that paying customers will not lose their current effective usage capacity.

3. Publish transparent usage limits.

Disclose the exact allowances, consumption rates, and reset conditions before changing subscription terms.

4. Preserve customer choice.

If unified allowances are introduced, provide an option to retain separate limits.

5. Engage with the community.

Consult paying subscribers and address their concerns before implementing changes that could significantly affect their daily work.

Our Message to OpenAI

We appreciate the technological progress OpenAI has made.

We want ChatGPT, Work, and Codex to become better integrated, more capable, and easier to use.

But technical integration should not come at the expense of affordability, transparency, and productive working time.

A unified interface is progress. A unified restriction is not.

OpenAI has stated that most users are not expected to experience more frequent usage resets.

However, without clear information about the new allowances, subscribers cannot independently verify that assurance.

We therefore call on OpenAI to suspend and reconsider the December 2026 consolidation.

Keep advanced ChatGPT and Work/Codex usage allowances separate.
