Dear Miss Hayden Brown and all the Upwork team,
 
We are writing on behalf of the Russian and Belarusian Upwork community and our customers from around the world. Earlier, we were heartbroken when we learned that the Upwork platform had suspended all the citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. We all believe that Upwork is not just a platform for freelancers, but a place where everyone has equal rights regardless of background, nationality, race, sex, gender, location, or other similar characteristics. The space that has no place for discrimination or harassment. We fully understand the pain of the conflict and we share the losses suffered by Ukraine. Many of us have friends, families, and business partners there. But we all believe that Russian and Belarusian citizens, as well as Ukrainian citizens, are not at fault in this situation.

Our freelance and client community is frustrated by the fact that Upwork refuses to honor its obligations for reasons other than commercial or legal. But we ask you to remain in the context of professional relations and business ethics. Ordinary people can't be blamed or persecuted for politicians' actions neither in Russia or Belarus, nor any other country. With no connection with the outer world and source of income, the freelancers will find themselves powerless. This will only lead to the punishment of the people who are innocent and have no power to deescalate the conflict.

The principles of equality and non-discrimination are integral to international legislation. Upwork's Non-discrimination Statement states that "Upwork's mission is to create economic opportunities so that people have a better life". This is a place that we have recommended to our friends and customers as a trustworthy platform with the best specialists. It was discouraging to learn that the entire part of the Upwork community was simply excluded due to the location and politician’s actions. Our concern is that the only way to continue to work with Upwork is the relocation to another country. Given this precedent, nobody can be certain that users in other countries will find themselves in the same situation as Russian and Belarusian freelancers and clients. The United Nations Millennium Declaration states that “No individual and no nation must be denied the opportunity to benefit from development.”

We understand that some companies paused their operations on the Russian market due to currency exchange, logistics and other reasons, but the most valuable are those who understood that citizens of Russia and Belarus need to be endorsed. Сompanies like Cloudflare, Mars, Procter & Gamble, Leroy Merlin, Metro, Auchan Holding, Nestle, Mitsubishi, Accor Group, Marriott, InterContinental, Subway, Uniqlo, and others have currently or previously decided not to impose a blanket rejection on Russian business, but terminated customers identified as tied to sanctions. PepsiCo, CocaCola, McDonald's, IKEA paused their work in Russia but keep paying salaries to their workers to support them. Despite attempts to boycott these companies by certain groups, their decisions were met with overwhelmingly positive reactions and support from the impacted part of the population, resulting in the companies' popularity and brand image soaring.

Upwork has openly stated that technical and/or legal troubles are not to blame for the cessation of operations in Russia and Belarus and instead was a corporate decision. We understand that this is a quick measure response, but we also are observing the narrative shifting, with more and more people and companies understanding that the freelance community needs to be allowed to thrive in order to maintain the peaceful, opinion-forming part of society. This implies a possibility of successful, positively acclaimed rollback in Upwork's best interest. Individually and collectively we urge you to reconsider your decision.

Мы пишем вам это письмо от лица всего русского и белорусского сообщества Upwork и наших клиентов со всего мира. Некоторое время назад мы с огорчением узнали, что платформа Upwork приостанавливает работу жителей России и Белоруссии. Мы считаем, что Upwork — это не просто платформа для работы фрилансеров, это место, где все имеют равные права, вне зависимости от происхождения, национальности, расы, пола, местоположения и прочих характеристик. Что здесь нет места дискриминации и притеснению.

Мы в полной мере осознаем всю боль конфликта и разделяем скорбь Украины. У многих из нас там есть друзья, родственники и деловые партнеры. Тем не менее, мы считаем, что ни русские, ни белорусские, ни украинские жители не виноваты в происходящем.

Принципы равенства и недопустимости дискриминации — это неотъемлемая часть международного права. Положение Upwork о недопустимости дискриминации говорит о том, что «Миссия Upwork заключается в создании экономических возможностей для людей, которые хотят сделать свою жизнь лучше». Именно поэтому мы рекомендовали эту платформу своим друзьям и клиентам, считая, что это надежная площадка с лучшими специалистами. И были обескуражены тем, что существенная часть сообщества Upwork оказалась исключена из-за своего расположения и действий политиков. Мы обеспокоены тем, что единственным решением для продолжения работы с Upwork было предложение переезда. Учитывая этот прецедент, никто больше не может быть уверен в том, что пользователи из других стран однажды не окажутся в таком же положении как фрилансеры и клиенты из России и Белоруссии. Декларация Тысячелетия Организации Объединенных Наций говорит о том, что «Ни один человек и ни одна нация не должны быть лишены возможности пользоваться благами развития».

Наше сообщество фрилансеров и клиентов обескуражено отказом Upwork от исполнения своих обязательств по причинам, не связанным с бизнесом или законодательством. Мы просим вас остаться в рамках профессиональных отношений и деловой этики. Нельзя винить и наказывать обычных людей из России, Белоруссии или любой другой страны, за действия политиков. Без связи с внешним миром и источника дохода эти люди окажутся беспомощными. На самом деле, это приведет лишь к тому, что наказаны будут те, кто наименее заинтересован в конфликте.

Мы понимаем, что некоторые компании приостановили работу с Россией по причинам, связанным с курсом валюты, логистикой и т.д., однако, тем более цены те, кто понял, что жители России и Белоруссии не должны страдать. Компании Cloudflare, Mars, Procter & Gamble, Leroy Merlin, Metro, Auchan Holding, Nestle, Mitsubishi, Accor Group, Marriott, InterContinental, Subway, Uniqlo и другие в настоящее время или в прошлом приняли решение не останавливать работу с партнерами затронутых стран, а ограничились лишь ограничениями в отношении лиц, попавших под санкции. Такие компании как PepsiCo, CocaCola, McDonalds, IKEA приостановили работу в России, но продолжают платить зарплату сотрудникам, чтобы поддержать их. Upwork открыто заявляет о том, что приостановка работы в России и Белоруссии не связана с техническими или юридическими причинами, это было корпоративное решение. Мы понимаем, что это была быстрая реакция на происходящее, но в настоящее время курс повествования изменился — все больше компаний и людей понимает, что сообщество фрилансеров необходимо для формирования мирной и формирующей общественное мнение части общества. Это подразумевает, что пересмотр решения Upwork будет встречен позитивно и приведет к росту его популярности.
