We are all aware under Director Unsworth’s leadership the Ten Year Puget Sound Harvest Plan was done intentionally leaving the Commission out of any details. It seemed a deliberate slap in the face and yet, we haven’t seen any reaction from the Commission. Their lack of action so far is sending the wrong signal. Its obvious at this point that the only possible solution for some of the problems at WDFW involves new leadership. So far, the commission has been reluctant to provide it. A mild public tongue lashing does not qualify as leadership, nor will it provoke meaningful change. The way we see it, the Commission can collectively remove the Director, or they surrender their authority to him by their inaction! He challenged them in public, he needs to go! What Director Unsworth did was essentially gut the Commission on public TV in front of all the stakeholders! Why would there be any question as to his immediate dismissal? Yet, we understand some on the board are hesitant to exercise their authority to fire him. This is not his only issue. His POOR leadership has plunged the department into chaos. His failure on Point no Point, the failure of any progress on the Skokomish River and the loss of quality staff are some examples of HIS DEFICIENCY AT LEADERSHIP! Not to mention he has lost all support and confidence from the stakeholders, business leaders and members of the legislature. His direct challenge to the authority of the Commission, effectively neutering them openly in public cannot go without repercussions! We realize we have asked you to send many emails to support the fight, and we need to ask again. We feel this is so very important to our fight for transparency we need to have you reach every Commissioner. Tell them they must act or risk losing the confidence of the people. WE NEED EVERYONE TO SEND A MESSAGE TO EACH COMMISSION BOARD MEMBER LIKE THE ONE BELOW! Commissioner, You were appointed by the Governor, through public initiative to be a representative of the people. In your duties you were given the authority over the Director of WDFW for a reason. The actions of Director Unsworth are a direct and intentional challenge to that authority. As your constituent, I find it very troubling that there would be any question from ANY MEMBER of the board as to the dismissal of Director Unsworth. I call on each and every one of you to move forward, rapidly and with cohesion to send a message that you take your responsibilities to the people and your authority over the Director seriously and remove Director Unsworth from office immediately. The way we see it, the Commission can collectively remove the Director, or you surrender your authority to him by your inaction! You owe it to your stakeholders to re-establish our confidence that you are in charge. We will be carefully watching our Commissioners on how they vote on this matter.
