The Provincial Government has taken a significant step forward with the Homeowner Protection Act, 2024. This landmark legislation bans the registration of Notices of Security Interest (NOSIs) for consumer goods on the Land Registry, marking a crucial moment for victims, lawyers, law enforcement, and more. Most importantly, all current NOSIs for consumer goods registered on title will be retroactively deemed expired.

Retroactive legislation is a rarity, but in this instance, it was deemed essential for wide-reaching reform. The impact of this decision is profound and will resonate for years to come. Many of our clients have suffered from fraudulent NOSIs totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars, some have even lost their homes because of them. On behalf of these victims and the countless Ontarians set to benefit from this change, a heartfelt thank you is in order.

Gratitude is extended to Minister Todd McCarthy and all those involved in driving this crucial change forward. A further thank you to all of you who supported the initiative. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the positive implications of this legislation cannot be overstated.
