Open D&D, Revive OGL 1.0a! Stop HASBRO from killing our freedom!

The Issue

Freedom. The Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game is the world's greatest TTRPG not because of how it's creators Wizards of the Coast (WotC) runs it, but because of how the community surrounding the game was built on freedom of expression, creativity, and representation. The OGL (Open Game License) as it exists in it's 1.0a version is freedom and we are in danger of losing it with the introduction of OGL 1.1.

This Petition's goal is to protect OGL 1.0a's flexibility and the freedom of the community to save it from an update to this license that will harm everyone including:

  • Small D&D homebrew creators
  • Youtubers
  • PBP D&D Servers
  • West march D&D Servers
  • 3rd party virtual table tops (Alchemy RPG, and Foundry VTT)
  • 3rd party creators ( The Griffon’s Saddlebag, DMDave, Loot Tavern, and Mage Hand Press )

With the introduction of OGL 1.1, Wizards of the Coast intends to impose new rules for how people use Dungeons & Dragons content. Some of the largest impacts of these would be the imposition of:

  • Royalties/strict sanctions on creators that make (25% royalty for larger projects such as the 3rd party creators or services listed above)
  • Act in ANY manner Wizards D&Ds distasteful (be it for legitimate concerns or because they can then publish and use that person's created content for profit, then terminate the creator's ability to do so), and provide no legal recourse for them to do so.
  • Restricting content people can make about D&D to STRICTLY "Roleplaying games in printed media and static electronic file formats" and excludes other content like Youtube videos, virtual tabletop games, and other adjacent media like music.

What does signing this petition do for the community?

This petition is an appeal to Wizards/Hasbro to withhold imposing OGL 1.1,  and to preserve D&D to as we knew it as of June 2022.
