Open Canada to Syrian refugees!

The Issue

I am an emergency nurse who has served in many humanitarian medical aid missions in the Middle East. I have lately spent 3 months providing care in Syria during the crisis. I have witnessed the unspeakable atrocities of the war in Syria firsthand. I’ve seen the terrible suffering and displacement that is happening everyday and I know that Canada is not doing enough to help civilians find safety here within our borders.

That’s why I started this petition. I want to know what the party leaders running in the upcoming election intend to do to help Syrian refugees. I am asking them to commit to accepting and admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees into Canada by December 31, 2015.

The Syrian war has been ongoing for more than 4 years now. More than 240,000 Syrians, mostly civilians, have lost their lives. The war and the political oppression have resulted in the displacement of more than 11 million, internally and externally. The modern world has not witnessed such an immense influx of refugees since the second world war. This is an international humanitarian crisis in every sense of the word.

Canada, the country of human rights and freedoms, has admitted less than 1500 Syrian refugees since the crisis began in 2011. Given the millions out there, this is simply NOT enough. The current government has pledged to bring in more refugees but little has actually been done. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children, who are in desperate need of food, shelter, and above all, in desperate need of a peaceful place to live.

Historically speaking, Canada has always taken a solid and proactive stance on humanitarian action and has stepped in to take in refugees of war and political oppression. So I keep wondering, what is stopping Canada now? Countries like Turkey, Lebanon, Germany and Sweden (to mention few) have all stepped in and taken in a large number of refugees. So why is Canada in stand-by mode?

The situation is very dire and cannot wait any longer! This is a massive humanitarian crisis that requires Canada to act, and act immediately and at a large scale. Millions of displaced civilians are in need of a peaceful place to live, and in need of it now, not next year or the year after. Unless we act, history will remember us as the nation who witnessed the atrocities of war, but chose to stand by and watch as the Syrian refugees desperately tried to flee to lands of peace. This is not who we are as Canadian. We are the country of humanitarian zeal and we value human life above all. So let us be true to our values: open our country to the Syrian refugees. We promise we will open our hearts and homes to them.

The Decision Makers

Justin Trudeau
Prime Minister of Canada/Premier ministre du Canada
Responded
The devastating humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq has rightly broken the hearts of Canadians across the country, and international society at large. In Canada, municipal and provincial leaders have already taken concrete action, as have many Canadians in a private capacity. It is time for federal leaders to step up, expand current refugee targets, and do more to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian refugees who are so desperately seeking safety. We must put partisanship aside in addressing this crisis. Justin Trudeau has proposed a meeting with Stephen Harper, Thomas Mulcair, and Elizabeth May – in order to sit down in collaboration to discuss the best course of action for Canada going forward. Unfortunately, neither Harper nor Mulcair showed any interest. If elected, a Liberal government will expand Canada’s intake of refugees from Syria by 25,000 – by January 1, 2016 – through immediate, direct sponsorship by the Government of Canada. The Liberal plan is ambitious, yet attainable, and will do more to help more Syrian refugees than either Mr. Harper or Mr. Mulcair’s plan. A Liberal government will also invest at least $100 million this fiscal year to increase – without reducing standards – refugee processing, as well as sponsorship and settlement services capacity in Canada. Finally, we will immediately contribute $100 million to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, to support critical relief activities in Syria and the surrounding region. Canadians know that our country can – and must – do more to offer safe haven to the men, women, and children who are currently fleeing persecution in Syria and Iraq.

Thank you for signing the petition to help Syrian refugees. An NDP government will move immediately to bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015, and an additional 36,000 Syrian refugees over the next four years. In response to the worst humanitarian situation since the end of World War II, Canada has not done its fair share on the global stage. While millions of refugees are desperately searching for a safe haven, Canada has refused to throw open its doors, welcoming fewer than 2,500 Syrian refugees over the past two years. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants has said that Canada’s fair share would be 9,000 refugees a year. An NDP government will bring in 10,000 government assisted refugees this year, and then 9,000 government assisted refugees every year for the next four years. We will also encourage Canadians to contribute to the cause through private sponsorship by speeding up processing of private sponsorships, with no cap. We will also abide by the Federal Court’s decision and fully restore the Interim Federal Health Program to ensure that refugees have access to the healthcare they need once they arrive. You can count on New Democrats to act swiftly and compassionately in response to humanitarian crises. Let's continue to work together to help those in need.
