Open Basement Lunchroom Section to 7th Graders

The Issue

Today, a group of 15 noisy seventh graders swarmed into the lunch table where I've been eating for the past year at Disney II Magnet High School, Chicago. In the blink of an eye, my lunch table—a comforting consistency in my daily routine—was overrun, leaving no space even for my lunch bag. I wasn't alone in my frustration; many of my peers expressed similar feelings of discomfort and annoyance.

The overcrowding in our basement lunchroom is unbearable. The presence of both seventh and eighth graders in such a constricted space not only causes congestion but also creates an overwhelming mess. Walking up the stairs is now an obstacle course, fraught with the peril of tripping or being run over. Moreover, the increased body heat makes the area hotter and more humid, which only adds to the general discomfort.

This congestion also affects the monitors' ability to maintain order and ensure a pleasant lunchtime experience for all. It's clear that the current arrangement is not sustainable or fair to any group.

A simple and effective solution exists: open up the smaller section of the basement lunchroom for the seventh graders. This adjustment would allocate more space, alleviate congestion, and create a more comfortable environment for both grades, while helping the staff as well.

With this petition, we aim to persuade the school administration to consider opening the smaller lunchroom section to alleviate these issues. Doing so will improve not only the students' daily school experience but also allow the staff to manage the lunchtime periods more efficiently.

Join us in this effort for a more equitable, organized, and comfortable lunchtime environment. Please sign this petition to let the administration know that change is necessary for the well being of Disney II Magnet High School students, 7th and 8th grade.
