Open a new concert musical venue in Newport, South Wales (old Sainsbury’s Shaftesbury)
The Issue
Development plot suggestion: Old Sainsbury’s Shaftesbury, Newport , 13 Wyndham Street, St. Julians NP20 5JT
Growing up in Newport, South Wales, was a thrilling experience. Among my fondest memories are the echoing riffs and soulful melodies that reverberated from iconic local venues like TJ’s and the Newport Centre. Back in the 90s during the cool Cymru era, Newport was an epicenter of the music scene, hosting huge bands that drew fans from all over the UK. TJ’s was more than just a venue; it was a cultural landmark where legendary bands played and dreams were born. Now, these monumental locations have been lost to the sands of time, leaving a void in the heart of the community.
Today, Newport stands quieter, yearning for that vibrant pulse of live music that once gave it such a unique identity. Newport’s music scene not only brought economic benefits through tourism but also fostered a sense of community and creativity among residents. In the absence of dedicated music venues, young talents are denied the opportunity to experience live performances that inspire and motivate.
To revive this rich heritage and provide new generations with the same exciting experiences we once enjoyed, it's crucial to invest in a new concert or musical venue in Newport. This venue would not only honor the city's rich musical past but also stimulate the local economy by attracting visitors, creating jobs, and rekindling the arts in a region deeply identified by its musical legacy.
Newport is ready to once again become a beacon on the musical map, embracing the sounds of today while nodding respectfully to its history. Let us unite to rebuild what was lost and foster a creative space that ensures the flourishing of arts and culture in our beloved city.
Unfortunately the developers of the new leisure centre being built did not factor in a concert space in the design like previous Newport leisure centre.
To support this vision and give Newport the vibrant musical stage it deserves, please sign this petition and help reignite our city’s heart through the power of music.
